Spring roll is one of the typical food from Semarang.
Because of its region of origin, people call it lumpia Semarang or Semarang spring roll. It is made of chicken
meat, dried shrimp, and boiled egg, which is served in a roll. This is one of
the food that attracts local people and tourists to taste it when they go to
Semarang.
When
looking at Semarang spring roll from the outside, it is usually the same as
other spring rolls. The difference is the ingredients inside Semarang spring
roll. Generally, spring rolls contain bamboo sprout and vegetables such as
carrot, bean sprout, or cabbage. However, Semarang spring rolls contain bamboo
sprout, chicken meat or dried shrimp, and boiled egg. The bamboo sprout used in
making Semarang rolls must be the young one so that it has soft texture and it
is crunchy when people bite it.
Another
thing that differs Semarang spring rolls with other spring rolls is its way of
serving. Semarang spring rolls can be served as fried spring rolls or wet spring
rolls (without frying process). Wet spring rolls are suitable for people who
avoid eating fried food. The batter used in wrapping Semarang spring rolls also
uses special recipe so that people will find crunchy taste in every bite of
Semarang spring rolls. Moreover, Semarang spring rolls is better to be served
when they are warm. In serving them, it is necessary to add chili, pickles, and
sauce as well. For people who like spicy food, they can eat Semarang spring
rolls with chili, and those who dislike spicy food, they can eat them with
typical sauce which is served together with the spring rolls.
Tourists can easily find and taste Semarang
spring rolls in many food sellers in Semarang. Each food seller may have their
own characteristics in making and serving Semarang spring rolls. Therefore,
tourists can eat wherever they like. After exploring the city and eating
Semarang spring rolls, it is also necessary for them to bring Semarang spring
rolls home as the typical food from Semarang.
